Shaken Not Stirred: Our Top Three James Bond Supercars

With last week’s release of the new James Bond movie Spectre, here at Sell Your Jamjar - the UK's first online car buying website, we thought we would take a look at the top three most iconic Bond cars, how they each made their appearances in the films and why they are so irresistible to the public today.

Aston Martin DB5

First seen in the 1964 film Goldfinger, the DB5 is arguably one of the most recognisable Bond cars. Produced between 1963 and 1965 the DB5 was named after Sir David Brown who was the head of Aston Martin from 1947 to 1972. Accessories which came as standard on the DB5 included reclining seats, wool pile carpets, electric windows, twin fuel tanks, chrome wire wheels, oil cooler, full leather trim and even a fire extinguisher. Celebrities of the 60’s loved them and famous owners included Peter Sellers, Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney and George Harrison. Few other classic cars draw as much attention as the DB5 and thanks to its appearance in Goldfinger, From Russia with Love and Skyfall, a good DB5 these days would not leave you with much change from half a million.

Lotus Esprit

The Spy Who Loved Me featured perhaps the second most famous James Bond car of all time, after the iconic Goldfinger DB5: the Lotus Esprit. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) is the tenth spy film in the James Bond series, and the Lotus Esprit is seen falling into the sea and then converting into a submarine. Nicknamed Wet Nellie, the custom-built submarine in the shape of the Lotus Esprit was used in the film and, after a short promotional tour upon completion of filming the submarine, was placed into storage. After 10 years, no one claimed the contents of the storage locker so it went to auction and the owner of a tool shop bought its contents blind for less than $100. In 2013, it was restored and put up for auction. Billionaire Elon Musk bought it for £550,000 (about US$1,000,000)

BMW Z8

In The World is Not Enough (1999), Pierce Brosnan's Bond enjoys equipment on his retro looking BMW Z8 such as surface-to-air missiles, titanium armour and remote control pads. With a top speed of 168mph and 0-60 in 4.2 seconds, this muscly roadster car met its end when it was sliced in two by a circular saw hanging from a helicopter belonging to Bond nemesis Elektra King in Azerbaijan. However, the secret behind the car is that the model on screen was actually mocked up using a Corvette engine and a kit-car chassis and the Z8 itself was not damaged. The actual number plate of the car used in the film - V354 FMP - was never registered to the Bond vehicle, but it has since been registered to another BMW Z8 in the UK.
