CES Las Vegas 2016: Future Concept Cars

This year CES Las Vegas was as much about cars as it was about technology. The annual event invited visitors to take a look into the close and distant future of what is in store for our road vehicles.

Some of the concepts shown will never ever make it into the real world, but if only some of the car tech makes it into reality, our concept of private transport will be changed forever.

Faraday Future

Faraday Future, a Chinese backed US business, attracted a lot of attention with its Batmobile-type car.

Although, only a concept that will never go into production, the mission of the company is to tackle both how cars are made and how they are used. FF, as it prefers to be called, showcased its first concept car, the FFZero1. It has a claimed all-electric power output of 1,000 horsepower.

Toyota

Toyota’s FCV Plus concept explored a hydrogen-powered car that generated electricity from a hydrogen fuel cell. This fuel cell would power the car and could also be connected to an external fuel cell and used to power your house as well.

Although, somewhat vague, Toyota also revealed its ideas around a Toyota Smart Centre, a cloud-based system that would connect 'people, vehicles and communities' to combine data and make the driving experience more pleasant and efficient.

Volkswagen

In a bid to move on from the diesel emissions scandal, Volkswagen was at CES with a new voice and gesture system for the VW Golf, a 'car dashboard of the future', and the BUDD-e, a feel good, nostalgic, all-electric minivan.

The BUDD-e is overflowing with futuristic and fantastical technology and feel-good factor. Designers combined the instrument cluster and the infotainment system into one unit with three screens sitting behind the steering wheel. It offers driving information, navigation directions, entertainment details, and video streams for the camera-based 'e-mirrors.'

BMW

BMW wants to say goodbye to door mirrors completely and replace them with cameras which offer a wider view and better night visibility.

Its concept i8 showcased with no doors or wing mirrors and was the talking point of the BMW stand at CES 2016.

BMW's concept featured a new ‘gesture’ system called AirTouch, an extension from the hand gestures already used by the 2016 7-Series.
