Formula E: Technology from the Race Track to the Road

With more and more automotive specialists releasing electric vehicles, electric technology is beginning to push back against the internal combustion engine, which has until now dominated the marketplace.

Motorsport also reflects this cultural shift, with Formula E, short for the FIA Formula E Championship, that involves the racing of electric-powered cars.

The idea for the series came about in 2012, and the inaugural championship started in Beijing on September, 13 2014. It has just completed its second year and people are asking, are there learnings we can take from the racetrack to the road?

Dr Pawan Goenka, a director of an Indian car manufacturer, thinks that technology from a race car definitely sees its way into mass production. He said: "In a racing car you are not so concerned about affordability or cost. It doesn’t have to last four or five years, it has to last for one hour. You take that technology and you make it reliable, long-lasting and affordable for mass production road cars."

Could this mean, then that by taking part in Formula E, automotive organisations such as Mahindra, Renault, Audi and Citroen will have an advantage?

"Yes, undoubtedly," according to Goenka. "Because the kind of consultants that you’re working with, for Formula E, are at the cutting edge."

As it stands, drivers change cars half way through the race because the battery range will not stretch to a full race distance, but after next season there will have been improvements to the batteries which will allow each driver to start and complete the race in the same car. Such is the speed of progress in this field.

When the ePrix began, the drivers were racing with identical cars but more and more bespoke items have been allowed to be added such as powertrains and gearboxes.

"Some manufacturers went with a single, big motor, some went with two," explains NextEV driver Nelson Piquet Jr. "Some people went with different gears, some people went with single gears. There's all kinds of different builds that the manufacturers have been creating."

Former Ferrari Formula 1 team principal Marco Mattiacci recently explained to Motorsport.com why Faraday Future became involved in Formula E. He said: "I think Formula E is a very important platform to progress our technology and to foster continuous innovation and R&D with some important cross-pollination to road cars."

And more is yet to come, booked to commence in the third season (2016–17), there will be a brand new support series called Roborace for autonomously driving, electrically powered vehicles. This will be the first global championship for driverless cars.
