Sell My Maserati
Masarati is known around the world for producing some of the most luxurious cars in the world. Founded in Italy, the company celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2014. It was established on December 1, 1914 by Alfieri Maserati and his brothers Bindo, Carlo, Ettore and Ernesto. Initially some of the brothers worked on building Grand Prix cars for Diatto who had previously been involved in making railway carriages. This was stopped, however, in 1926 leading the brothers to work together on creating the first Masarati race cars – one of which Alfieri won the 1926 Targo Floria in – an open road endurance car race which was held in the mountains of Sicily. In 1932, Alfieri died of injuries relating to car accident but Bindo, Ernesto and Ettore – Carlo died in 1910 of tuberculosis – continued to run the company until 1937 when they sold their shares to Italian industrialist Adolfo Orsi although they remained engineers. He relocated Maserati to Modena in northern Italy where it remains. One of Maserati’s proudest moments was when it claimed back-to-back wins at the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940. When Italy became heavily involved in World War II, the company halted all car manufacturing to support the war effort by producing many different components. But it returned to building cars at the end of the conflict. Argentinian Formula One driver Juan-Manuel Fangio won the World Championship in the Maserati 250F in 1957.
After the Mille Miglia tragedy of 1957 involving a Ferrari 335S that killed Spanish driver Alfonso de Portago, his co-driver Edmund Nelson and nine spectators when the tyre blew and the car crashed into the crowd, Maserati withdrew from road racing. It still built cars for private racers but its focus switched to building luxury road cars, its first was the Maserati 3500 GT. Citroen took over ownership in 1968 but by 1975, due to the oil crisis two years previously, the French carmaker wanted to liquidate the company until an Italian state-owned firm stepped in to take the reins. By the mid-Eighties, Chrysler bought a share in Maserati that rose to 15 per cent with the company producing the Chrysler TC for export to the USA. Fiat eventually took over full ownership of Maserati in 1993 – it bought a 51 per cent share in the late Eighties – before it sold half of its share to Ferrari in 1997 before it then became sole owners. The Fiat Group took back control in 1995 and is still the proprietors. Current Maserati models include the Ghibli, Quattroporte, GranTurismo and GranCabrio.
