Sell My TVR
TVR is a British manufacturer of luxury sports cars including coupes and convertibles and was founded in 1947 by Trevor Wilkinson. Wilkinson left school at 14 and completed an engineering apprenticeship at a local garage in his native Blackpool before he set up his own business which he named Trevcar Motors. Trevcar Motors mainly serviced cars and trucks until Jack Pickard, a car enthusiast, joined Trevor at the company in 1947 when the business started to produce his own cars. It was renamed TVR Engineering, using the first, fourth and six letters of Trevor's name. Two years later TVR built its first chassis which became TVR Number One which Wilkinson sold to his cousin for £325 although it was later involved in a crash and salvaged for parts. The Number One had a Ford engine and a rear suspension from the Morris Eight. When TVR launched Number Two it was very similar to the original but its front suspension was changed. TVR's Number Three, with the introduction of an engine taken from an Austin A40, followed and it was during a car club event that Wilkinson, who drove the car, met David Hives who would go on to work for the company and become instrumental in the setting up of a production works in New York in the USA.
In 1954, TVR sold its first model to the public called the 'TVR Sports Saloon' – at a cost of £650. It later produced two models, the TVR Open Sports and TVR Coupe at the request of car enthusiast Bernard Williams who later attempted to sell them, rather unsuccessfully, in the USA. The Grantura Mark 1 was the next model to be released with fastback-style body but by 1958, the company was dissolved due to debts of £10,000. It was re-formed as Layton Sports Car Limited. Wilkinson, who died in 2008 at the age of 85, and Pickard both left the company not long afterwards. Famous models followed including the Griffith and Trident before shareholders Arthur Lilley and his son Martin bought the assets of TVR to mitigate their personal losses of £2000. They set up TVR Engineering Limited in 1965 with the new TVR Vixen Series 1 (later known as the M Series) proving popular. Peter Wheeler, a chemical engineer, bought TVR in the 1980s before he sold it to Russian banker Nikolay Smolensky for £15million in 2004. Later models included the Chimaera, Cerbera, Tamora, Tuscan and Sagaris. Smolensky sold TVR to Les Edgar, under the name TVR Automotive Limited, in 2013 with a new TVR model set for release in 2017. The headquarters is in Guildford, Surrey.
