Sell My VW

Volkswagen is a Germany car manufacturer and the second largest automobile maker in the world. VW owns 12 subsidiaries including Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche and Ducati, as well as Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Scania and Man. The company was originally set up in 1937 by the German Labour Front – a Nazi trade union organisation – because few Germans owned cars at the time. In fact, the average German could only afford a motorcycle, so with this in mind a number of automotive initiatives started up to provide a 'peoples' car' which would be smaller, affordable and suitable for families. Previously, in 1932, Adolf Hitler had demanded the production of a basic car able to carry two adults and three children at 100 km/h (62 mph). He wanted the German people to have access to cars in the same way that the Americans did and he wanted the car to cost around 990 Reich marks (£3000) and be available to the general public through a savings plan. But the private industry could not produce a car at such a low cost, so Hitler commissioned a state-owned factory and he contracted Czech, automotive engineer, Ferdinand Porsche to work on designs. Porsche is credited for producing the original VW beetle shape but the factory had only produced a handful of cars before the start of Second World War in 1939 and none of the cars were actually delivered to any holder of the completed savings stamp books. Post-war, the British seized the factory and although it could have been dismantled in line with it being used to make military vehicles, the man who took charge, a British Army Officer called Major Ivan Hirst, painted one of the cars green and presented it to the British Army Headquarters. An order was placed for 20,000 VW Beetles to be used by the personnel of the occupying forces. For the next year car production continued to increase in spite of the factory being in a significant state of disrepair and production having to stop when it rained due to damage to the factory roof. It was offered up to several motor industry executives across Europe and was famously rejected by all.

Some army personnel were permitted to travel back home with their Beetles and one of the very first Beetles brought back in that way to the UK is still owned by Peter Colborne-Baber, the son of the original proprietor of the UK's first official Volkswagen Importer, Colborne Garages of Ripley, Surrey. From 1948, Volkswagen became an important element, symbolically and economically, of West German regeneration and a former manager was brought back in to look after the running of the factory when Hirst returned home. In 1949, shipments of the car were sent to the US and in 1952, Canada took receipt of a shipment of Volkswagens which were embraced and accepted enthusiastically by the Canadian people. Sales sored and were further bolstered by highly successful advertising campaigns which targeted a young and sophisticated audience. Volkswagen began diversifying with new product lines and four new models. They also acquired Auto Union in 1964, who previously owned Audi, and NSU Motorenwerke AG in 1964. By merging the two companies Volkswagen paved the way for Audi as it known in modern times. After a sales lull in the late 60's and early 70's, the big change came as the Volkswagen Golf, designed by Italian Giorgetto Giugiaro, went into production in 1974 and has been the mainstay of the business ever since. VW Group was created as the holding company for the car maker in 1975 before it embarked on several acquisitions in the 1980s and 1990s. It famously battled with Porsche for control over each other's companies until VW finally won the fight in 2012. In September 2015, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that from 2008 Volkswagen had improperly installed engine control unit (ECU) software which had acted as a 'defeat device' and this was in violation of the Clean Air Act – a charge it admitted which could result in fines and possible criminal charges.
